How about a mind-reading wheelchair? Well almost, the technology exists now and it is just a matter of lowering the costs with mass production and economies of scale. How so you ask? Well simple really, you see there has been some special forces transfer technology that is used by the military and now SWAT Teams. The technology allows a small micro device to read signals from the brain to the voice box. When you are thinking something, before you say it, your vocal cords vibrate. This concept has been getting a bit of chat at Slashdot:
New Scientist reports on another development in interfacing with the central nervous systems. The system “eavesdrops” on signals sent from the brain to the larynx, so even people who lack the muscular control to vocalize a command can operate it. The potential applications of this technology are as varied as human imagination, among them: allowing a person who has lost speech capability to vocalize again.
This means that the wheelchair person with a severe case of spinal injuries could operate the wheelchair with no problem. The technology will also be used to control other equipment, prosthesis or even a high-tech net-centric home. Having a handicap now, and into the future will not be nearly as debilitating as it was in previous periods. The Robots cometh and the machines that can read our minds are upon on - All here to serve us.
One Futurist was quoted as saying that this breakthrough will keep us from throwing away humans, which have contracted a serious disease or been involved in a life threatening accident. Sincerely, Lance.
